For so many of Timor-Leste’s residents, this is certainly the case. The challenging landscape of Timor-Leste can create significant barriers to reaching vital healthcare, with mountainous terrain and rough roads meaning the closest health facility is often still an impossible distance away.
At Maluk Timor, we’ve spent many years finding ways to improve healthcare access for Timorese communities, no matter where they live. That’s why outreach programs are at the heart of our work, bringing critical healthcare services into rural and remote communities that would otherwise face severe health risks without this care. Here’s how we’re expanding access to healthcare throughout Timor-Leste through our outreach programs.
How mobile outreach clinics improve maternal healthcare
There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to the health of pregnant women and children. With the clear goal of improving key health outcomes in areas where access to maternal and child health services are often limited, we’ve continued to take a multi-pronged approach to overcoming geographical barriers.
Our mobile outreach clinic is one way we support Timorese women with antenatal care. Our staff work closely with local community healthcare workers to build their skills, improving regional and rural healthcare outcomes through increasing the presence of skilled birth attendants and antenatal healthcare supporters.
Fighting tuberculosis through mobile healthcare teams
Tuberculosis (TB) is a deadly disease that is all but eradicated in the developed world – but in Timor-Leste, it remains one of the greatest health risks, with the country fighting the 7th highest rates of TB in the world. With young children – especially girls – under 5 years old, the elderly, people with HIV and those with immune-compromised health conditions at a higher risk of contracting TB, the fight to reduce its spread is critical to the country’s future and each community’s safety.
Maluk Timor is hard at work identifying and treating people with TB in order to save lives and reduce its spread. One of our key activities here is in the area of contact tracing, where we screen family and household contacts of TB patients to help identify and refer confirmed cases for a TB-specific antibiotic treatment program. To further strengthen this process, we introduced a triage in referral hospitals to ensure that TB patients receive first access to treatment. Our mobile TB team is equipped to perform contact tracing in remote villages, working to protect regional communities from the further spread of this infectious disease. By providing critical information to under-resourced communities, we’re also able to help fight the stigma that surrounds TB, leading to greater tracking abilities and reduced spread from individual to individual.
Using education as a powerful outreach tool to promote oral health
Sometimes, outreach isn’t just about physical access to healthcare services – it’s about knowledge that empowers transformative health outcomes.
Our oral health program is a significant area of focus at Maluk Timor, where upskilling is the tool we use to prevent dental cavities and promote strong oral health. With 13 registered dentists and 46 dental nurses, oral health remains a critical and underfunded piece of the nation’s healthcare system. We strategically work to build the knowledge, capacity and skills of the country’s oral health workforce in order to overcome this gap bit by bit.
Alongside our work in treating children with Silver Diamine Fluoride, developing competency-based training modules that support the professional development of Timor-Leste’s critical dental nurses, and supporting other NGOs with clinical services and resource access, we’ve used the power of education as an outreach tool that makes a difference.
We carried out a cash-prize social media campaign surrounding World Oral Health Day to demonstrate the importance of tooth brushing, using a poem and video demonstrations. This campaign was so effective that we even received participation across Portugal, Brazil, and Timor-Leste—social media and education can go hand in hand to create better healthcare outcomes!
Building public engagement and HIV awareness through outreach activities
Some of the greatest barriers to HIV prevention and treatment in Timor-Leste are stigma and misinformation. With many people still afraid to get tested or seek out care for treatment, Maluk Timor is actively working to combat these societal fears via strategic outreach activities.
We’ve combined community-based education, in-person outreach, and a strong social media presence to reduce new infections through awareness and screening access. This work combines to help us influence community attitudes, making it safer for people living with HIV to be accepted into their communities.
Paired with HIV training programs that equip community healthcare workers to identify, treat and promote the prevention of HIV, we’re seeing significant progress as we provide remote advice and support across Timor-Leste.
